Know Your Maker
StitchWallah is the brain child of Hilary Niederer, a textile connoisseur and ex-film industry costumer. Hilary, a New Zealander, lived in India for over 10 years and fell in love with the textiles (and a film industry local) and now as returned with her beau to New Zealand's picturesque South Island to live a slower life and share beautiful Indian textiles with the world.
These Ikat napkins are traditionally woven by hand from pure cotton. The weave is dense and heavier weight than a the usual linen style napkins. The yarns of Ikat are bundled and dyed before weaving resulting in the blurred effect of the pattern as the weaver attempts to line up the dyed yarns. The blur is characteristic of Ikat and highly prized by collectors. The weavings are produced carefully and over time, not quickly like a machine made fabric, due to the intensive skilled labour required to produce them.
Care
Wash in cold water with like colours. Hang to dry in the shade, do not leave damp in the machine. Do not soak or wash with lighter colours as the dye may transfer.
