At Civil Dawn Studio, we celebrate artists who instil everyday objects with soul and storytelling. We're thrilled to introduce the whimsical world of Austrian ceramicist Florian Tanzer—also known by his creative moniker, Luma.Launisch.

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

From Video Art to Clay

Originally a video artist, Florian Tanzer transitioned into ceramics around 2018, channeling his passion for craftsmanship into tangible forms. Since 2021, he has embraced a daily practice under the hashtag #AVaseEveryDay, crafting a unique vase or creature each day. This commitment reflects his exploration of mood, form, and the unexpected joy found in creation.

The Wasen-Wesen: Vases with Character

Tanzer's creations, affectionately termed "Wasen-Wesen" (Vase Creatures), blur the lines between functional objects and expressive sculptures. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind character, often featuring playful faces or anthropomorphic features that evoke a range of emotions—from mischievous grins to contemplative gazes. These ceramics invite interaction and bring a sense of humour and warmth to any space.

Some objects take themselves very seriously. Others – like the ceramics by Flo, do exactly the opposite, and in doing so, gain unexpected depth. His vases and figures grin crookedly, beam with wide smiles, or appear slightly worried. They hover somewhere between art object, everyday item, and character study. Sometimes they are candle holders, sometimes fruit bowls, planters, or vases – but always full of attitude. 
Flo describes his work as ceramics with character – vases with faces, full of soul. And you believe him instantly. “I’m not striving for perfection. Freedom is my approach.” His pieces don't start on paper but take form in the making. “I simply begin kneading the clay and let myself drift.” Some figures smile, others look confused or worried – just like life.”
